Computer Rooms | Data & Telecoms

Telecoms

Location
The telephone line frame produces no heat and requires most attention. A quiet corner of the room is a suitable location – near to the main entrance.

Security
The line frame and telephone system processor both require security, and unless a separate secure Telecoms room is available, the computer room is the best location.

Transients
Transient protection needs considering. Most over voltage damage is caused by lightning strikes to the ground around a premises and travelling inside along underground cables.

Fibre optic cables themselves are not electrical conductors. However their sheathing is.

Cable management
The large number of small cables associated with telecoms means that tidy managed containment is required. Whilst the raised floor void offers a suitable route between frame, processor, patch panel and racks, trunking is required to contain and protect from the physical danger presented by the heavy removable floor panels.

Intranet

Cabling to and from patch panels and server racks need the same considerations as for Telecoms. However, transients are less of a problem, although surges can still be induced by local over voltages.

Wireless systems will need to commence outside the room if Faraday caging – inherent in a usual CCS security design protects it. Outside the room antennae may be embedded in suspended ceiling tiles.

The controlling PC for the network is usually better located in a secure office outside the computer room because of its unfriendly environmental conditions – noise, temperature and air movement.
