The heart of any business having a Data
centre, Computer, Server/Telecoms or Data/Telecoms room, will usually be that
facility. It follows that the loss or damage, sufficient to
cease computing and telecommunications operations, are likely
to be fatal.
It is not possible to construct such a
facility which can be guaranteed to be resilient to
all risks. Aeroplanes fall out of the sky and breakers
protecting computer equipment cannot be both resilient
enough to take account of their motors and sensitive
enough to react swiftly to all electrical transients.
Electro mechanical auto changeover equipment has been
known to seize up.
A minor occurrence that damages mainframe equipment could
have unacceptable time-lapse consequences – that equipment
not being immediately replaceable.
It follows that a duplicate facility, located
remote from the main, is necessary.
However the duplication of the entire facility is not usually
required – only the critically important items tailored
into a working system that may also be used to complement
the main activities.
Subscribing to a disaster recovery space
provider may provide this. Such companies specialise in
the provision of space, guaranteed to be available in the
event of your facility being taken off-line. Some also permit
duplicate equipment to be installed – removing the
problem of long delivery.
However, the majority of businesses, large enough to warrant
mainframe computer rooms, also have alternative accommodation
which could be converted to provide a disaster recovery
facility.
They also find that they are able to link this facility
in with the business, rather than leaving it unproductive.
The exercise thus becomes one of designing resilience into
their operations, rather than just duplicating the whole
system. This is usually, by far a more effective and economic
solution to the security question. One reason being that,
in the event of an incident at one site, the alternative
is able to take over seamlessly – a factor increasingly
important in this age of communication.
