Computer Server and Telecoms rooms are replacing the computer
rooms which businesses required before the technological leap
in computer power and telecommunications occurred. Nowadays
they comprise our most popular request and vary in size from
15m2 upwards. They comprise a secure
space within an existing premises, developed to provide
accommodation and a controlled environment for computer
network and development servers, usually housed in equipment
racks, and telecommunications modems, processors, patch
panels, line frames and associated equipment.
The electronic equipment is usually designed to operate
in normal office conditions. Close control of temperature
humidity and air filtration is not always required.
Temperatures are designed to be maintained at circa 22 degrees
C +/- 3 degrees
Because of equipment space packing density,
its importance to the business and its power and connectivity,
many of the environmental features found in computer
rooms are still required.
Equipment heat packing densities
are currently running at twice the norm we used to
consider for computer rooms and will shortly increase
to three times that amount. The main source of heat
is from multiple servers stacked within equipment
racks.
Whilst the air conditioning systems are less sophisticated,
they still require a similar amount of design consideration
as with computer rooms,
in order to avoid pitfalls.
A secure and low profile space is required. Water,
vibration and electrical disturbance need avoiding.
Accessibility by the IT department is required.
We need to fully understand the business activity related
to the facility as well as the physical requirements of
the hardware itself.
Statutory
and Non Statutory Regulations, requirements and
guidelines, BSs, CoPs - see Standards
& Regulations are all considered for relevance.
Corporate and customer aspirations need
examining to evaluate resilience and future expansion possibilities
and limitations.
All matters need to be financially constrained
within the budgets produced during the initial outline design
phase. We may examine alternative means of financing certain
elements contained within the project.
The environmental and power requirements
of the equipment intended is assessed from information obtained
from the equipment manufactures.
Size of the facility alters considerations
of method of air distribution, need for raised floor or
ceiling plenums and associated external plant accommodation.
In the build, the three main considerations are: security,
environment and communication. These are constituents of
each and every element involved in the facility’s
construction. Needless to say, technology plays an important
role in each and we aim to keep up with its advances.
CCS manages the whole project and all those
involved in it on behalf of the client.
A Server/Telecoms room, depending on its size may require
some of the following associated accommodation. For information
sheets, contact
CCS.
Telecommunications
equipment space – microwave or satellite dishes
Printers
Stores
Mechanical
and electrical services plant rooms
External
M&E plant accommodation – secure areas
Standby
